Mildred " Peggy" (Pankey) Edwards

–

Appomattox, Virginia

Mildred Pankey Edwards was born on November 20, 1932, in Appomattox, Virginia to the late

Hubert and Sadie (Daniels) Pankey. She was the eighth of nine children. Mildred departed this

life to go Home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at The Johns Hopkins

Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mildred, affectionately known as Peggy, attended the Agee School in Appomattox County.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and was baptized at Springfield

Baptist Church. Upon moving to Baltimore, she worshipped at Southern Baptist Church and Mt.

Pleasant Church and Ministries. She loved the Lord and could often be heard singing His praises

in church and around the house.

Following her education, she worked at several jobs in Appomattox. She met and married Wilbur

Lee Robertson, Sr. and from this union, two children were born, Gloria and Wilbur, Jr. (Brother).

The family moved to Baltimore, Maryland where she gained employment in food service in the

Sparrows Point area near the Bethlehem Steel Company. Later she decided to become an

entrepreneur operating her own food truck called "Millie's Diner" serving delicious meals to

factory and industrial workers around Baltimore City.

Some of Peggy's many talents and interests were cooking, baking delicious apple galettes, pies

and cakes, fashion and sewing, gardening, and traveling. She often wore or accented her clothing

and home decor with her favorite colors, green and yellow; green for prosperity and yellow for

sunshine and happiness. She enjoyed the summer sun and beaches of Atlantic City and flying or

cruising to Canada, Nova Scotia, Nevada, and the US Virgin Islands. In her Baltimore

neighborhood, she was the treasurer for the East Baltimore Neighborhood Association.

After many years she married Joe Edwards on September 8, 1979. They had many of the same

interests especially driving luxury automobiles, traveling, and being with family in Virginia and

North Carolina until his passing in 1988. She loved big American-made cars and her new

husband gifted her with a brand-new Cadillac after the wedding ceremony. Her dream car was

her 2004 Lincoln Town Car which she drove frequently to Appomattox.

Mildred was preceded in death by five sisters: Leola Hairston, Erma Lewis, Hazel Proctor,

Kathleen Williams, and Sadie Garner; two brothers: Hubert Pankey and Anderson (Darby)

Pankey.
