On March 1, at 10:38 p.m. the Angel of Mercy graced our beloved sister Peggy Lee Smith. She was preceded in death by her parents, the late Deacon Elbert L. Smith and Sarah Jane Ferguson Smith.
Peggy was born on Sept 18, 1952 in Brooklyn, NY. She was baptized into the Missouri Synod of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1960.
She attended St. Mark’s Lutheran High School, Maspeth, New York from 1966-1970 and was the first African American Homecoming Queen; 1970-1974 she graduated with a B.A. of Psychology. August 1976 to June 1977 she was a second grade teacher from St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church School, serving from Aug. 1976 to June 1977. She became a Senior Engineering Associate with Underwriters Laboratory from Nov 1977 to October 2002. In Aug 2006 she received her master’s degree during her employment at Underwriters Laboratory LLL in Raleigh Durham, NC, through Hunter College.
Peggy leaves to mourn her sister, Mrs. Susan Smith Crum, Kissimmee, Florida, Mrs. Marie Smith Hudson, Lynchburg, VA; Ret. Senior Trooper David Jerome Smith (Kathy Lynn Brown-Smith); Glenn Allen, VA and Ms. Cheryl Lynn Smith, Appomattox. She leaves behind 12 nieces and nephews to share in her memory; Jason, Clarence, Sara, Madeleine, Lisa-Marie, Liza-Malia, Ahmad, Nile, Yasamen, Justin, Cheryl, and Shahrhah-Aliyah; four great nieces and nephews, Jayden, Xiomara, Karmen, Brianna, Chloe and many family members, former co-workers and friends
A funeral service for Ms. Smith will be held on Thursday, March 7, 2024, at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Bruce and Stiff Funeral Home. She will lie in repose from noon until the time of service at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the Ferguson Family Cemetery on Piney Mountain Rd., Appomattox, VA.
